Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a chronic disease and the individual shows extreme tiredness pain and sleep disorders that persist for a long time. CFS is also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) or systemic exertion intolerance disease. It is more common in women and might last for 6 months or more. The causes of CFS are unknown but some of the environmental or genetic factors might trigger the syndrome.

Symptoms: The symptoms vary in individuals.
  • Ability to do normal or regular activities
  • Difficulty in thinking
  • Sleep disorders
  • Severe headache
  • Dizziness
  • Joint pain
  • Orthostatic intolerance, etc
Causes and Risk Factors:
Women are more likely to be diagnosed with CFS than men. This condition is rare in children. However, girls are more prone than boys. This condition is commonly seen in adults aged between 30-50 and in children aged between 13-15. CFS is genetic and is inherits the risk of it from one of its parents. Environmental factors of CFS may include - improper diet, stress, infectious organisms, etc. Other conditions that might be the underlying cause of CFS are - Fibromyalgia, Irritable bowel syndrome, Chronic pelvic pain, Chronic prostatitis, Temporomandibular disorders, Post-concussion syndrome, etc. Having any of these conditions could increase the risk of having CFS.

Treatment:
There is no cure for CFS. However, some medications can be prescribed to reduce and prevent the symptoms. Medications like muscle relaxants, Eszopiclone, Antidepressants, Benzodiazepines can be prescribed for sleep problems and pain relievers like aspirin, ibuprofen can be prescribed for joint pain. Alternative medications like acupuncture, nutritional supplements, relaxation therapy, yoga, etc can also help in providing relief.

Did you know?
Although the diagnosis of CFS is vague, scientists have now identified a blood test that might help in the diagnosis of CFS. The blood test shows changes in the electrical patterns of an individual's cells. When the cell is stressed, the difference in the electrical signal can be easily identified.

Another study showed that injecting lidocaine solution to the back muscles helped ease patients' fatigue. It was noted that, the muscles and other peripheral tissues for involved in chronic fatigue. Lidocaine thus helped in blocking the abnormal signaling of muscle metabolites.

Brain Protein Promotes the Maintenance of Chronic Pain

A protein called RGS4 (Regulator of G protein signaling 4) plays a prominent role in the maintenance of long-term pain states and may serve as a promising new target for the treatment of chronic pain conditions.

The discovery may help doctors stop acute pain from progressing into chronic pain, a condition in which patients experience not just pain, but a number of debilitating symptoms ranging from sensory deficits to depression and loss of motivation. The transition from acute to chronic (pathological) pain is accompanied by numerous adaptations in immune, glial, and neuronal cells, many of which are still not well understood. As a result, currently available medications for neuropathic or chronic inflammatory pain show limited efficacy and major side effects.

Commonly administered opioids provide a temporary alleviation of some pain symptoms but carry serious risks like addiction in the context of long-term treatment for chronic pain. Therefore, there is an imminent need for novel approaches towards the treatment of chronic pain and for the development of medications that disrupt pain states instead of simply alleviating symptoms.

RGS4 is a multifunctional protein widely expressed in brain circuits that process pathological pain, mood, and motivation. The genetic inactivation of RGS4 does not affect acute pain or the induction of chronic pain, it promotes recovery from sensory hypersensitivity symptoms in preclinical models of peripheral nerve injury, chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, and peripheral inflammation.

Bone Loss and Antiretroviral Therapy in HIV and HCV

Among the numerous comorbidities that affect people living with HIV (PLWH), an increased prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis has been observed across a range of studies. The etiology of reduced bone mineral density (BMD) in this population has been linked to various factors, including those associated with HIV infection and treatment, as well as unrelated factors.

As a result, PLWH has a greater prevalence of fractures compared with the general population, with one study showing rates of 2.87 vs 1.77 per 100 people per year, especially involving the spine, hip, and wrist.

Five things to know about chronic illness

  • Mental part is as hard as the physical part

As most of us know chronic illness patients are both physically and mentally affected due to the stress created by the diseases.

  • Relationships change

It is hard to be a good employee or good friend or partner due to the lack of energy in the body.

  • Everyone offers you advice

Everyone offers their own advice like yoga, meditation, essential oils, acupuncture, CBD oil, vaping, prayer, bone broth and the less fat diet.

  • Educate yourself — and everyone else

We must inform the neighbors, family members and the colleagues at the workplace since it would be highly helpful during the critical solution.

  • Support is everything

Chronic illness is lonely, so families moral support is highly essential to overcome the cruel phase.

Neonatal Lupus: Get to know more

As many of us wonder neonatal lupus is one of the uncommon autoimmune diseases produced mainly because of the cutaneous lupus lesions or congenital heart block. Neonatal Lupus is one of the congenital disorders in which the baby develops the red rashes over the skin or eruption.

This is usually caused by the transfer of lupus causing antibodies from the mother to infant through placenta.

Generally, the diseases caused by lupus are of 4 types,

  1. Systemic Lupus erythematosus
  2. Cutaneous Lupus erythematosus
  3. Drug-induced lupus erythematosus
  4. Neonatal Lupus.

People with lupus can die due to the infections that are related to the immune-suppression drugs that are generally administered to overcome the diseases or at the certain rare cases they may lead to the cardiovascular diseases which will affect the adults at the early 20s.

One among the chronic disorder: Crohn's disease

Crohn’s disease is one among the inflammatory bowel disorder. It usually causes the inflammation of our digestive tract, which may lead to the abdominal pain, severe diarrhoea, fatigue, weight loss and malnutrition. Inflammation caused by crohn’s disease can involve different areas of the digestive tract in different people.

The infection caused due to this disease usually spreads deep into the layers of affected bowel tissue. Crohn’s disease can be both painful and debilitating and sometimes may lead to the life-threatening diseases.

Still there is no cure for the crohn’s disease therapies can only reduce the signs and symptoms of this disease and bring about the long-term remission.

Autoimmune thyroid diaseases

The autoimmune chronic thyroiditis or Hashimoto' thyroiditis is an inflammatory autoimmune disease of the thyroid, characterized by a lymphocitic chronic infiltration. This pathology is frequently silent, often hands to a gradual but progressive and irreversible hypo-function of the thyroid. It is the most frequent cause of hypothyroidism in the guilty ones of the world to enough contribution of iodine, while it is relatively being rare in the zones to lack iodine. The greatest incidence is the women it is calculated around 3,5 cases for 1000 inhabitants a year. At the base of the pathology there is an inflammatory autoimmune process that brings to the destruction of the thyroid follicles, caused both from a cells-mediate mechanism and from organ specific antibodies. Once activated the lymphocitic T helper it produces different cytokines that perpetuates and the inflammatory process they make autoimmune chronic. Therefore both the inflammatory process and the lymphocitic infiltration leads to a reduction of the synthesis of the thyroid hormones. The bio-humoral mechanism seems to have a secondary role. Sometimes in some occasions we can also be found some antibodies anti TSH receptor blocking (TSHRblokingAb) responsible of the atrophy variant (idiopathic myxedema) or even more rarely anti Receptor of the TSH antibodies (TRAB) responsible of the condition of transient hyperthyroidism or at times permanent that rarely can be found in patients with Hashimoto' thyroiditis (Hashitoxicosis) due to the release of the thyroid hormones from the destroyed thyroid cells. Often the chronic thyroiditis can be are associated with other autoimmune diseases (poly-glandular autoimmune syndrome). The diagnosis founds him on the data of laboratory that underline elevated values of specific antibodies (overall AbTPO). Nevertheless in a low percentage of cases 5-10%, we can find a condition of chronic thyroiditis in absence of specific antibodies. In such case the diagnosis is sustained by the aid of the sonography. The typical picture in fact it is peculiar with a markedly hypochoic thyroid with poor intra-thyroidal vascularization. In many cases is not in demand some treatment because the gullet is small the patient it is often asymptomatic with levels of TSH in the range of the norm and in absence of antibodies. In that case it is not required any therapy a part the use of selenium as anti-oxidant agent and Vitamin D. In patients with hypothyroidism (both subclinical than clinical) the pharmacological treatment was mandatory as the administration of the substitutive therapy with levothyroxine especially in children and in the women that are in pregnancy or to the search of pregnancy. The purpose of the hormone-therapy is that to normalize the TSH values with a first control to 45-60 days and once reached the therapeutic remuneration they are enough hormonal controls TSH and FT4 every 6-12 months. Lasting the therapy in the 50-90% of the cases is assisted to a reduction of the thyroid volume and consistence both for the normalization of the values of TSH and for the reduction of the lymphocytic infiltrate. Besides it is also assisted to a reduction of the antibodies title, to which has been shown the association it contributes using selenium and vitamin D.
